Joseph Wade and his family appeared in the census of Lancaster County from 1820 to 1840. In 1843 he petitioned to open a tavern in Marietta, East Donegal. The following annoucement appeared in the Columbia Intelligencer:
IN THE MATTER
Of the intended application of Joseph Wade, for license to keep a tavern [Sign of the Compass] on Front Street, in the town of Marietta, East Dongal township -- being an old stand.
We the undersigned, citizens of the said town of Marietta and vicinity, being personally acquainted with Jos. Wade, the above named petitioner, and also having a knowledge of the house for which the license is prayed, do hereby certify that such house is necessary to accommodate the public and entertain strangers and travellers, that he is a person of good repute for honesty and temperance, and that he is well provided wiih house room and conveniences for the lodging and accommodation of strangers and travellers. We therefore beg leave to recommend him for a license agreebly to his petition.
