Her fathe 2 CONC r adopted the style 'Sieur de St-Quentin' and kept the family income up by selling Marguerie' 2 CONC s inheritance from her first husband to newcomers to the New World. Marie Marguerie saw to i 2 CONC t that her children received good educations. Her daughters by Quentin were educated at the U 2 CONC rsuline convent established just across the street from the Hertel house. Marie Marthe's step 2 CONC -brother's letters mention his fluency in French, English, and Latin. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1666 the first census was made of New France. The Moral household at that point in time co 2 CONC nsisted of: "Quentin Moral sieur de Saint-Quentin, 44, habitant ; Marie Marguerie, 40, sa fem 2 CONC me; Jeanne, 13 ; Marie, 10 ; Gertrude, 8 ; Marthe, 5 ; Robert Henry, 20, et Nicolas Dupuis, 2 2 CONC 4, domestiques". Marie's daughters by Jacques Hertel had already married and left the house 2 CONC . Trois-Rivieres and adjacent districts had grown in 20 years from a handful of settlers t 2 CONC o a village of 69 families and 455 souls. However the town itself still consisted of only abo 2 CONC ut two dozen households and less than a hundred Europeans. 2 CONT 2 CONT A year later, the census showed that one servant had left but that otherwise the household wa 2 CONC s much the same: "Quentin Moral, 49 ; Marie Margris, 40 ; Marie-Jeanne, 14 ; Marie, 12 ; Gert 2 CONC rude, 10 ; Marthe, 6 ; Robert Henry, domestique, 23 ; 6 bestiaux, 64 arpents en valeur. (6 ca 2 CONC ttle, 64 arpents in value.) " 2 CONT 2 CONT Quentin also saw that his daughters would marry well and that their husbands were provided wi 2 CONC th adequate dowries in terms of land and titles. In late 1667 Marie-Jeanne was married to Jac 2 CONC ques Maugras at the age of 15. Quentin's sisters families would eventually all move to St-Fra 2 CONC ncois-du-Lac, the settlement founded by Jean Crevier. Crevier was the husband of one of Mari 2 CONC e Marguerie's daughters by her first husband, Jacques Hertel. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1676, at age 18, Gertrude Moral was married to Jacques Joyelle, a master gunsmith. With t 2 CONC he assistance of the legal machinations of his father-in-law, Joyelle would obtain a seigneur 2 CONC y, then later move to St-Francois-du-Lac near his brother-in-law Jean Crevier. 2 CONT 2 CONT Marie Marthe Moral was married in 1682 at the age of 21 to Antoine Dubois, who was in his thi 2 CONC rties. Nothing appears to be known of his birthplace or profession. Quentin Moral had alread 2 CONC y engineered a complex land swap whereby Marthe's brother-in-law, Joyelle, moved to St-Franco 2 CONC is-du-Lac, whereby Dubois obtained a property there, despite his evident inability to pay. St Vincent had been completed only a few years befo 2 CONC re, and featured the finest stained glass windows in the city (the cathedral was destroyed b 2 CONC y bombing in World War II but the windows were stored in 1939 and can now be seen in the mode 2 CONC rnistic Church of Joan of Arc in Rouen). 2 CONT 2 CONT Marie has been identified as one of 262 Filles à Marier or "marriageable girls" that emigrate 2 CONC d to New France between 1634 and 1663. They were recruited by religious groups or reputable p 2 CONC ersons who had to guarantee their good conduct. Most were from rural peasant families; Mari 2 CONC e seems to have been one of the minority from an urban family of tradesmen. Unlike the late 2 CONC r "Filles du Roi" who emigrated after 1663, the Filles à Marier were not recruited by the sta 2 CONC te; did not receive a dowry from the King; and were promised nothing but the possibility o 2 CONC f a better life. 2 CONT 2 CONT However Marie's story was not one of an impoverished immigrant. Her father was a man of subst 2 CONC ance, a maritime merchant in Rouen. He had obtained from the rights to the island L'île de l 2 CONC a Trinité in the delta where the Saint-Maurice river empties into the St Lawrence Seaway. He 2 CONC r father sent his son and daughter to America to settle, establish families, and secure his r 2 CONC ights to this land. 2 CONT 2 CONT Therefore Marie was accompanied on her 1641 voyage from Rouen to New France by her brother, F 2 CONC rancois. The passage was difficult - one tenth of all passengers en route to New France die 2 CONC d on the Atlantic. Marie's father had evidently arranged a marriage before her departure - w 2 CONC ithin weeks of arrival, she was married to Jacques Hertel. 2 CONT 2 CONT Her brother Francois established ownership of the forested island , popularly known as L'îl 2 CONC e aux Cochons (Isle of the Pigs). He married well four years later. Unfortunately for his fat 2 CONC her's plans, he died in 1648, only seven years after arrival. 2 CONT 2 CONT Title to the island then passed to Marie. But only three years later, her husband, Jacque Her 2 CONC tel, passed away as well, after Marie had bore him at least two girls. A woman with small chi 2 CONC ldren could not exist for long unmarried in frontier America. 2 CONT 2 CONT Two years later, she married Quentin Moral de Saint-Quentin, who became a King's lieutenant 2 CONC , and later a civil and criminal judge. Quentin's objective seemed primarily to be to obtai 2 CONC n title to Marie's island, which became known forever after as L'île Saint-Quentin. He prompt 2 CONC ly began in 1654 to deforest the island and plant it with crops. She bore her second husban 2 CONC d at least four daughters. All of these daughters passed her mitochondrial DNA to their desce 2 CONC ndents. 2 CONT 2 CONT However the marriage was not happy. One source (Raynald Drouin) says that at 50 years of age 2 CONC , Marie became a sacristine (nun). Quentin lived for sixteen years more, until Marie was 66 2 CONC . Upon her death at age 80, Marie Marguerie was buried beside Jacques Hertel, her first husba 2 CONC nd. Could there be any greater evidence of their estrangement? The cure of the parish of Troi 2 CONC s-Rieveres, Luc Filiastre, officiated. 2 CONT 2 CONT L'île Saint-Quentin remained cropland until 1930, when it was converted to recreational use 2 CONC . Today it is a popular recreational park. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Marie's mitochondrial DNA was of the W haplogroup. The first woman of the W haplogroup - dubb 2 CONC ed Wilma - was born about 37,900 years ago in what is now northwest India or northern Pakista 2 CONC n. By 32,000 years ago Wilma's descendents were distributed in a band across southwest Asia 2 CONC , from Anatolia to northern India With the onset of the last glacial maximum, the area becam 2 CONC e extremely arid and the mountains blocked by glaciers. There are indications that the people 2 CONC s including Wilma's descendents were broken into two groups, separated by the arid desert tha 2 CONC t stretched from the Indian Ocean up to the glacier-bound Asian mountains. These tribes manag 2 CONC ed to survive in these two areas of 'glacial refuge'. 2 CONT 2 CONT After the glaciers receded and the deserts retreated 14,000 years ago, the way was clear fo 2 CONC r the expansion of modern humans from their ice age prisons. Wilma's descendants entered Euro 2 CONC pe through the Balkans, spreading in several directions. During this journey one W haplotyp 2 CONC e woman had a distinctive mutation at letter 119 in the HVR2 of her mitochondrial DNA. This w 2 CONC oman's descendents finally settle in what is now France, and one of them was Marie Marguerie' 2 CONC s female ancestor. 2 CONT 2 CONT The differences in Marie Marguerie's mtDNA code in the Highly Variable Regions 1 and 2 was: 2 CONT 2 CONT HVR1: 16209C 16223T 16255A 16292T 16519C 2 CONT HVR2: 73G 119C 189G 195C 204C 207A 263G 309.1C 315.1C 1 CHAN 2 DATE 26 Oct 2006 3 TIME 12:57:16 0 @I92@ INDI 1 NAME Quentin /Moral/ 2 SURN Moral 2 GIVN Quentin 2 _AKA Sieur Quentin Moral de St-Quentin 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1622 2 PLAC Valence, Drome, France 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 May 1686 2 PLAC Trois Rivieres, Pq, Canada 1 _UID 7B6CD4AC0D7F2146B06785ECE3E500994308 1 FAMS @F42@ 1 NOTE Quentin Moral de Saint-Quentin was the second husband of Marie Mareguerie. In 1651 Marie foun 2 CONC d herself widowed with three infant children, in a primitive wilderness, in a remote settleme 2 CONC nt with just a handful of huts. The entire population of New France at that time was only 24 2 CONC 4 souls, the vast majority of them single men. It is not surprising that Marie married Quenti 2 CONC n, a King's lieutenant, within a year of her first husband's death. 2 CONT 2 CONT But Quentin could only have suffered in comparison to Marie's first husband, one of the earli 2 CONC est inhabitants of the area, a legendary warrior, and the colony's translator with the Firs 2 CONC t People. Quentin was ambitious, and was to become a quarrelsome lawyer, and finally a civi 2 CONC l and criminal judge. 2 CONT 2 CONT At the time of their marriage, Trois Riviere was rocked by fighting. Father Jacque Buteux ha 2 CONC d been attempting to enforce their form of strict Catholicism on the local Indians. The Iroqu 2 CONC ois attacked the town on 6 March 1651 but were repulsed by the French's Huron allies. On 10 M 2 CONC arch the Iroquois killed Buteux north of the town, and two Huron on 8 June. On 19 August the 2 CONC y attack again, this time killing the governor and 22 other settlers. The hostilities lead t 2 CONC o the collapse of the beaver pelt trade. The defense of Trois Rivieres now lies in the hand 2 CONC s of a few friendly Indians employed to fend off any final Iroquois raid. 2 CONT 2 CONT After what must have been a very hard winter, 16 French indentured servants, sailors, and oth 2 CONC ers deserted Trois Rivieres, heading for anywhere outside of New France on 21 April 1652. A 2 CONC t other places in New France masters are being murdered by their servants, and others flee fr 2 CONC om other towns. The Iroquois attack Trois Rivieres again on 21 August, but are repulsed afte 2 CONC r an eight-day siege. An exchange of prisoners Is agreed. In October the Huron report that th 2 CONC e remnants of the April deserters have shoed up in Gaspe. Several had died, and they had reso 2 CONC rted to cannibalism. In November a vessel laden with the year's take of beaver pelts left fo 2 CONC r France, only to be taken by English privateers in the Saint Lawrence River. But that same m 2 CONC onth, with the colony facing extinction, a boat arrived at Montreal with 95 new settlers - th 2 CONC e "Grand Recrue de 1653". The statistics of this group show the dangers of life in the colon 2 CONC y. 153 men signed contracts to go to Canada, but 50 did not show up for the boat. Eight die 2 CONC d on the transatlantic voyage. 24 were killed by Iroquois, and five in accidents. Nine left n 2 CONC o offspring. The 49 survivors that found wives were the basis for the survival of New France 2 CONC . The population would increase substantially with each year from then on. 2 CONT 2 CONT The survival of the colony assured, Quentin turned to the matter at hand. Marie had inherite 2 CONC d from her first husband 200 acres of land at Trois-Rivieres. Quentin's objective seemed prim 2 CONC arily to be to obtain title to Marie's land. However there seems to be an issue with the righ 2 CONC ts to the land and the security it was supposed to provide from the very beginning. On 21 Jan 2 CONC uary 1654, less than two years after the marriage, Marie's son Jacques, at age 12, is reporte 2 CONC d to be "clearing trees of an island, inherited from his father, which he wanted to seed in o 2 CONC rder to support his mother and his young sisters". 2 CONT 2 CONT Quentin made the transition from an officer of the king to that of a civil and criminal lawye 2 CONC r - perhaps not difficult, since lawyers were not allowed to emigrate to New France. And th 2 CONC e inhabitants of Trois Rivieres, when not fighting off Indian attacks, were a quarrelsome bun 2 CONC ch. Between 1655 and 1662 at the "Prévôté de Trois-Rivieres" there were 907 cases tried fo 2 CONC r a population of about 700 for the whole area! The "Prévoté" was not only used to dispense c 2 CONC riminal justice and adjudicate disputes, it also served as a collection agency under the sett 2 CONC lements barter economy. 2 CONT 2 CONT Two thirds of the cases were for debt settlement and one sixth were to settle inheritance. On 2 CONC ly 20 were for verbal or physical violence. Quentin Moral was involved in 29 cases, reflectin 2 CONC g not only his role as an attorney but also his disputatious nature and perhaps his duties a 2 CONC s an officer of the King. In one case, Moral is being sued for having shot and killed other c 2 CONC itizens wandering pigs, probably part of his duties. A few cases later, Moral sues Jacques Au 2 CONC buchon, master carpenter and the most disputatious man in the colony (44 cases), because th 2 CONC e Aubuchon intentionally shot Moral's pig, (perhaps as payback?). 2 CONT 2 CONT While Marie's son by her first husband became the "Hero of New France", exceeding his fathe 2 CONC r in the breadth and fame of his exploits defending the colony against the First People and t 2 CONC he British, Marie would bear Quentin four daughters but no sons. This may have been unbearabl 2 CONC e at this time and place to this man who now adopted the style 'Sieur de St-Quentin' and lord 2 CONC ed over the island her step-son had cleared, which was known forever after as L'île Saint-Que 2 CONC ntin. Presumably her son's status protected her from the hostility Quentin may have felt towa 2 CONC rd her. 2 CONT 2 CONT Perhaps she found solace in the rigid religion of the colony - it is recorded that she was fo 2 CONC r fifty years the sacristan of the parish, which would date the event to around the time of h 2 CONC er marriage to Quentin. Whatever may be the case, she outlived Quentin by 14 years. Upon he 2 CONC r death at age 80, Marie Marguerie was buried beside Jacques Hertel, her first husband. It is speculated that Marie's mother, Marie Marguerie, had objected to the union, possi 2 CONC bly believing her daughter was marrying beneath her station to a man who was interested in he 2 CONC r potential wealth. In the marriage contract of 2 November it was recorded that the husband b 2 CONC rought 1500 livres to the marriage, while the bride brought 600 livres (the dowry from her fa 2 CONC ther), and the title of Lady, which she inherited from her mother. By the census of 1666 Jacques was back i 2 CONC n Trois-Rivieres, smithing but also trying his hand in the lucrative fur trade. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1671 the trade had taken him west. He is listed as attending the ceremony held with twent 2 CONC y Indian nations at Sault-Ste-Marie whereby the King of France took possession of the wester 2 CONC n territories. By the time of his marriage, Jacque had indeed amassed a considerable fortune. 2 CONT 2 CONT Having married into one of the leading pioneer families of the colony, Jacques could now purc 2 CONC hase land and obtain his own seignuery. On 27 December 27 1673 Jacques bought the seigneurshi 2 CONC p Tonnancourt, a tract valued at 2 arpents and of 50 acres on the St. Lawrence River, borderi 2 CONC ng that of his father-in-law Quentin Moral on the southwest. For whatever reasons, within a f 2 CONC ew years, Jacques wished to move away from his father-in-law Moral in Trois-Rivieres and mov 2 CONC e near his brother-in-law in St-Francois-du-Lac. Jacques made an abortive attempt to sell thi 2 CONC s tract in 1676 to another brother-in-law, Antoine Dubois. However Dubois could not raise th 2 CONC e cash and returned it to Jacques on 18 August 1677. 2 CONT 2 CONT In a series of complex (and partly illegible) land deals between his father-in-law, Quentin M 2 CONC oral, and his brothers-in-law ,Jacques bought and sold land in the area and moved the famil 2 CONC y to St-Francois-du-Lac sometime between 1683 and 1685. This began with a transaction on 5 Se 2 CONC ptember 1680 between Jacques and his brother-in-law Joseph Petit. Twelve days later Antoine D 2 CONC ubois made a kind of will, pledging any land he might own and all of his belongings to his fa 2 CONC ther-in-law Quentin Moral in the event of his death. This was evidently some kind of surety t 2 CONC o allow the transfer of Jacques' land adjacent to Moral to go through after all. On the sam 2 CONC e day Jacques rented his blacksmith equipment to an Urbain Beaudry. On 23 March 1681, Quenti 2 CONC n Moral, acting as attorney for Jacques, sued Joseph Petit for payment of 144 livres due fro 2 CONC m the transaction of the previous September. Finally, on 23 March 1683, Jacques leased for on 2 CONC e year, to another brother-in-law, Pierre Forcier, "All the workable lands belonging to him i 2 CONC n the Lordship St. Francois". Evidently he already had property there but was not yet ready t 2 CONC o move onto it. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1685, as attested in a deed involving sale of land below Platon, Jacques and his family we 2 CONC re settled in at St-Francois-du-Lac with his brother-in-law Jean Crevier. In 1690 his daughte 2 CONC r Josephette was baptized there. The baptisms of his children in 1694 and 1696 had to be cond 2 CONC ucted in Sorel since the church in St-Francois was destroyed in a raid by the Iroquois durin 2 CONC g which Jean Crevier was captured. He was tortured, ransomed, but died of his wounds. On th 2 CONC e 4 July 1698, Jacques' sons Jacques and Jean were granted some land in St Francois-du-Lac b 2 CONC y their uncle's son. The Joyel family became well established there. Jacques died at the ag 2 CONC e of 76 on 26 March 1716. Marie Gertrude Moral du St. Quentin survived him by twenty years, d 2 CONC ying at age 78 at St Francois du Lac on 28 August 1736. 2 CONT 2 CONT mtdna Haplogroup W 2 CONT HVR1: 16209C 16223T 16255A 16292T 16519C 2 CONT HVR2: 73G 119C 189G 195C 204C 207A 263G 309.1C 315.1C 1 CHAN 2 DATE 1 Jan 2007 3 TIME 11:41:21 0 @I109@ INDI 1 NAME Jacques /Maugras/ 2 SURN Maugras 2 GIVN Jacques 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1639 2 PLAC Deligny-le-chateau, Canada 1 DEAT 2 DATE 27 Mar 1690 2 PLAC Salmon Falls, New Hampshire 1 _UID 25FD787A4BB13A4D996FB1C4861D12541DAF 1 FAMS @F45@ 1 NOTE In 1690 the governor of New France decided to retaliate against a perceived British-sponsore 2 CONC d atrocity at Lachine.
