W1f or W1-119C - Atlantic W's

W1f or W1-119C is a subclade of W1 that so far has been found only in Western Europe, and with one exception only along the Atlantic Coast. It is defined as W1 by the lack of 194T in HVR2, and the 7864 change in the coding region. Based on a single complete sequence so far, it is then differentiated from W1 by the addition of the 119C change in HVR2 and a coding region change at 9695. Further descent is visible only in the HVR1 and HVR2 regions, since none of the other members of the group have had a full sequence. Based on this, the descent tree for this subclade is:

The Old World location of the ancestor for each group is shown where this is known. Certain patterns seem to be discernible.

Note that W1-119 seems to be a purely West European type - one of the first such localizations found so far. No 119's have been reported from South Asia or even east of Hamburg. This may mean that this is one of the few W motifs that appeared after the migration to Europe from Wilma's homeland in South Asia. There is one example from India with a 119 mutation, but this has very different coding region changes.

W1f3 is interesting in that the ancestor types come from the North Sea area (Sweden, Ireland), whereas descendents occur in the Canary Islands, Cuba, and North America. This may indicate these further changes occurred in historic time scales (since 1500).

The W1f5 individual from the Czech Republic is the only example from a non-coastal area. It would be interesting to verify this - has the correct matrilineal ancestor been reported?

The W1f2 group is the French W group, descendents of Marie Marguerie from Rouen, France. One member of this group had a further change in HVR2 in geneological time - in the last 200 years and is shown as W1f2a.

The distribution of W1f's in Western Europe is as follows:
