Ubeda

Home
Arabic Name: Medinat-Ubbadat Al-Arab.

Major Moorish city, 56 km from Jaen. The town began as the small Roman suburb of Salaria-Ubeda. The extensive modern city was built by Abderraman II (822-852), and was an enormous construction of 35,000 hectares enclosed in stout walls.

It prospered due to the agricultural bounty of the surrounding countryside under Moorish cultivation methods. The city was reconquered in 1233 by King Fernando III. Now a major border town in the continuing struggle against Granada, the last Muslim kingdom on the peninsula, Ubeda was further developed. Magnificent new buildings were constructed by the Christian kings, the fortifications were improved, and the Muslims, Jews and Christians were allowed to coexist with relative toleration. This broke down after the reconquest was complete, with the Jews being expelled from Spain in 1492, and the Arabs in 1609.
