The Sierra de Elvira is only 18 square kilometers in extent and is located 10 km northwest of Granada.
The range is noted for its earthquakes and is part of the much larger Sierra de Beticas, which extend from Cadiz in the west to Cullera in Valencia to the east, 600 km east to west and 200 km north to south.
