A region that encompasses southeastern France and northwestern Italy, stretching from modern Switzerland to the Mediterranean.

The Counts of Savoy and the free communes of Switzerland emerged after the collapse of the Frankish Kingdom of Burgundy in 1003. In the Cid's lifetime, the Counts of Savoy were: Umberto I Biancamano (1003-1047 or 10480; Amedeo I Coda (1048-1051 or 1056); Oddone (1051 or 1056 - 1060); Pietro I (1060-1078); Amedeo II (1060-1080); and Umberto II (1080-1103).
