Sancho
As portrayed by Gary Raymond in El Cid
Modern Name: Sancho II.

1037 - 7 October 1072. Eldest son of King Ferrando. King of Castille 1065-1072. He managed to take Galicia and Leon from his brothers Garcia and Alfonso. He was killed while attempting to take Zamora from his sister Urraca.

His father was King Don Ferrando; his mother Dona Sancha. Ferrando's possession were allocated among his children upon his death. From eldest to youngest: Sancho received Castile; Dona Urraca received Zamora; Dona Elvira, married to the Count Don Garcia de Cabra, received Toro; and Don Alfonso received Leon; and Don Garcia received Galicia. With Alfonso's backing Sancho siezed Galicia from Garcia in 1071. He then turned on Alfonso, defeating him at the battle of Golpejera in January 1072. Alfonso escaped capture through the intervention of Urraca and lived a short time in exile with the Muslim King of Toledo. However when Sanch besieted Urraca at Zamora, he was assassinated, and Alfonso returned to take possession of not only Leon, but Castile and Galica as well.

The Cid was a staunch supporter of Sancho against Alfonso, and suffered exile by Alfonso after Sancho's death.
