Don Sancho Garcia

Home
Modern Name: Sancho IV of Navarre.

1038-1076. King of Navarre 1054-1076. Son of King Garcia, nephew of King Ferrando. He was assasinated at the instigation of Alfonso. However Navarre managed to stay out of Alfonso's hands when the nobility there made Sancho Ramirez of Aragon their king.

Alfonso used the pretext of the Moorish King of Zaragoza's allegiance to Sancho Garcia to invade Aragon. Alfonso entered into a conspiracy with Sancho Garcia's brothers and Sancho Garcia was murdered at Rueda in 1076. However the rest of the Navarran nobility had no wish to be part of Alfonso's empire and instead made Sancho Ramirez of Aragon their king, effectively blocking Alfonso's expansion into Christian territory to the east.
