Modern Name: Algeciras. Arabic Name: al-Jazirah al-Khadra (Green Island).

Moorish kingdom at the southern tip of Spain, 123 km from Cadiz. It is set on an excellent bay adjacent to Gibralter, and has been an important port for centuries.

Ruled from 1013-1055 by Berberised Banu Hammudi princes, descendents of the Prophet Mohammed. Rulers: Al-Qasim ibn Hammud (1013-22?), who also ruled Tangiers while his brother Ali ruled Ceuta; Muhammad ibn Hammud al-Mahsi (1022-1048); Al-Watiq (1048-1055). Algezira was annexed by Seville in 1055.
