Legendarily founded by the Visigoth king Leovigildo, and named Recopolis for his son Recaredo. In the 10th Century known to the Moors as Racapel.
Alcarias was the center of the rebellion of Musa and Omar ibn Afsun in 926, when it was taken by Abd ar-Rahman III. In the 1090's it was taken by Alvar Fanez, but lost to the Moors again, then finally definitively reconquered in 1124.
Then my Cid and his company went up the Henares as fast as they could go, and they passed by the Alcarias, and by the caves of Anquita, and through the waters, and they entered the plain of Torancio, and halted between Fariza and Cetina: great were the spoils which they collected as they went along.
